In medieval times when a warrior would ready himself for battle, the armor he chose to wear was vital for combat success. Without question one of the foremost articles of protection was the breastplate. In the 13th century chainmail was the leading choice of chest protecting material, giving way to the single solid breastplate form in the 14th century. The breastplate served as a safeguard against the thrust of an opponent’s spear, sword and even arrows. Protecting one’s vital organs proved to be of ongoing importance, thus the evolution of the breastplate was a natural progression. In 1976, Richard Davis created the first all Kevlar vest, serving as the premier for bullet proof defense. It has always been advantageous for a soldier to guard and protect themselves against any and all attacks their enemy may use to come at them. Certainly, a spiritual application can be gleaned from the battle-ready soldier who would not even consider going to war without their breastplate.
While explaining the necessity of one who would adorn themselves with the full armor of God, first the Apostle Paul lists the belt of truth. Like the truths contained in both the Word of God as well as in the very character of God, this central component of armor is vital to all the other pieces. It supports the usefulness and effectiveness of the other articles. Which reveals to us that no soldier dare go into battle without these standard issues prerequisites. A belt’s primary purpose is to uphold the soldier’s garments, just as the truths of God that are hidden within the heart of the saints’ support & aid every move & decision that comes forth from them.
The next part of the soldier of God’s attire is the breastplate of righteousness. Unlike a weapon of offense, the breastplate is purposed to allow the soldier to withstand attacks from the enemy. A bit of historical knowledge in arms and armor would provide ample evidence of the usefulness of the breastplate, but as soldiers of God we must assimilate the union of this defensive instrument in regards with righteousness. One of the defining attributes of God, existing in all 3 members of the Godhead, is His undeniable righteousness. God is righteous in all His ways, echoing the word of the Psalmist in Psalm 145:17. Furthermore, magnifying the extent of God’s grace, those who are drawn to saving faith receive the imputed righteousness of Jesus Christ (2 Corinthians 5:21, Philippians 3:9, 1 Corinthians 1:30). That is, the sinless perfection of Jesus was cast upon our lives in an incomprehensible way that allows God to look upon our lives as spotless and blameless.
So, to put on the breastplate of righteousness is to have fearless confidence in the righteousness that we bear, for it is not our own, but it is the strength of the perfect Son of God actively working in our lives to accomplish His will. Thus, the enemy has not one weapon that could pierce through the breastplate of righteousness. Forged by the power of God, the breastplate of righteousness is impenetrable. Before we even get to any of the offensive weapons a soldier of God wears, may we take a moment to recognize that the enemy cannot win the battle if he cannot overcome this line of defense. Secured by the providential protection of God, His saints are to stand firm against the attacks of the evil one. The words of 1 Corinthians 15:57-58 should resonate within our hearts – But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of 3 the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain. This is no superficial pep talk or cliché sentiment. Rather this is a reassuring promise backed by the very power of God that declares the victory that has already been granted through Jesus Christ. Are we to be battle ready? Of course, Scripture tells us this much. Are we to concern ourselves over the outcome? Absolutely not, because the battle is already won.
